May 2010 Newsletter
DON’T BE SHY ABOUT
There have been some closer calls than necessary, that can easily be preventd. Calls of “Take Off”, “Landing”, “On-Field” and “Clear” can help keep planes away from each other and from people only if they can be heard. If there is anyone else on the fightline call out loud and clear!

AIRCRAFT TRIMMING
Most of you are already experts, but it’s always good to go over it again. The classic article of trimming was written by Peter Goldsmith. You can find it at the last link below. The following Web Sites come at trimming from slightly different angles. One of them is likely to be something that clicks with you:

AIRPLANE OF THE MONTH XP-67
It has often been said that a plane isn’t really good unless if looks good. The opposite isn’t necessarily true. The XP-67, which was contracted by the Army Air Force in 1940, looked light years ahead of its time, and is a beautiful aircraft even today, but never flew well. It’s top speed was 50 mph below projections, and it’s handling was so suspect that test pilots were unwilling to find the limits. It ended up as another wartime project that never went anywhere.
